A cable tray is a continuous horizontal perch running directly above the working floor. It is also nobody's job — which is why it is usually the last thing treated and the first thing to cause a complaint.

Why Cable Trays Get Missed

Cable tray falls between two trades. The electrical contractor installs the tray and considers bird control out of scope. The bird control contractor quotes the roof steel and does not see the tray on the structural drawing, because it is on the electrical layout. The result is a treated roof with an untreated perch three metres above the production floor.

That position is what makes it worse than it sounds. Roof steel is high enough that droppings mostly land on other steel. A cable tray sits low, over aisles, machines and packing lines, so everything it drops lands where people work.

Ask for the electrical layout, not just the structural one

Tray routes are on the electrical drawings. If your bird control quote was built from structural drawings alone, the trays are almost certainly not in it.

How Cable Tray Is Quantified

  1. Take the run lengths from the electrical layout, per level and per zone.
  2. Double them. A tray has two side rails and birds use both.
  3. Add ladder rungs and covers where the tray is wide enough to stand on top of a solid cover.
  4. Add the pipe racks running alongside — they are the same problem and usually the same fixing method.
  5. Note the fixing constraint — most sites will not permit drilling into tray, so clip-on or adhesive is specified.

Specification and Fixing

Rail-top spikes

Narrow strips along both side rails. This is the bulk of every cable tray job.

Clip-on fixing

Preferred. No drilling into tray, no interference with the earthing or the cabling.

Adhesive fixing

Where clipping is not practical. Needs a clean, degreased rail to bond properly.

Stainless in wet zones

Wash-down areas and humid plants corrode mild steel quickly at tray level.

Cover treatment

Wide solid covers are a flat surface in their own right and need spiking on top.

Never inside the tray

Nothing goes in among the cables. Treatment is on the rails and covers only.

Getting It Scheduled

The technical work is straightforward. The coordination is not. Three things make it happen:

  1. Put it in one scope. Decide early whether the electrical contractor or the bird control contractor supplies and fits it, and write it into that package.
  2. Do it before cabling where possible. On a new build, spiking an empty tray is quick, safe and cheap. After cabling it is slow and needs far more care.
  3. Match the shutdown. On a live plant, tray work sits over aisles and machines, so it needs the same access window as the roof steel.

Isolation still applies

Working at tray level means working next to live cabling and often over running equipment. This is contractor work with a permit, not a maintenance-team afternoon.
