Bird Control for Industrial Sites

Industrial bird control is rarely chosen. It gets started by an audit finding, a contamination incident or a safety observation, and it then has to be specified, quantified and raised as a purchase order. This page is written for that sequence.

Exclusion, Not Deterrence

At industrial scale there are hundreds of perchable surfaces in a roof structure, and protecting them one at a time is not a plan. The approach that works is exclusion in two layers.

  1. Close the envelope. Ridge vents, turbo ventilators, the continuous eaves gap, gable louvres, missing filler pieces, damaged sheets, service penetrations.
  2. Separate the roof void from the floor. Horizontal netting below the truss line over the area that carries product or people.

The lights-off survey

Before specifying anything, stand inside in daytime with the lights off. Every gap in the building envelope shows as a line of daylight. Five minutes, no equipment, and it is the most useful survey available — netting a roof void while a ventilator stands open achieves very little.

You almost never need the full footprint

Netting only the bays over racking, packing and the production line addresses the contamination and the audit finding at a fraction of the cost of the whole building. This is the largest single saving on an industrial job and it is rarely offered.

Which Product

Anti Bird Net

The primary industrial product. Horizontal exclusion below the roof structure, and vertical closure at ventilators, eaves and louvres.

Bird Spikes

The individual steel items — girder flanges, cable trays, light fittings, racking tops, wall ledges.

Pigeon Spikes

Wide flanges, bearing plates and machine tops where a narrow row leaves usable footing beside it.

Doing the Work on a Live Site

  1. Survey with the lights off and mark every entry point.
  2. Check for active nests. Most wild birds in India are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 — plan the clearance for after the young fledge, and build that into the schedule rather than discovering it on the day.
  3. Book the access once. Scaffold or boom is the dominant cost, so clean, seal and install in the same mobilisation.
  4. Cover or move stock and cordon the floor below.
  5. Clear damp, not dry. The dust is the part worth avoiding.
  6. Phase bay by bay around production rather than working over a live line.
  7. Clear gutters and downpipes of nesting debris before the monsoon.
  8. Add it to the plant walk. A new gap in the envelope is cheap to close and expensive to leave.

How do we stop birds getting into a factory or warehouse?

Close the envelope first — ventilators, eaves gaps, louvres, damaged sheets. Then net horizontally below the truss line over the areas that carry product or people. Doing the second without the first rarely works.

Do we have to net the entire building?

Usually not. Covering the bays over racking, packing and the line removes the contamination risk and the audit finding at a fraction of the full-footprint cost.

Will this satisfy a food safety audit?

Physical exclusion plus a documented inspection routine is generally what auditors want to see. We supply the products and the specification; the inspection record is yours to maintain.

Can spikes be fixed to structural steel?

Yes, but nothing drilled or welded without structural approval. Adhesive or mechanical clamp only, and galvanised or painted steel needs proper surface preparation first.

Can the work happen while we are running?

Normally in phases, bay by bay, with the floor below cordoned. It is worth planning around stock movement rather than working over live racking.

There are nests in the roof structure now. When can they be cleared?

Not while there are eggs or chicks — most wild birds in India are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Schedule the access for after they fledge and install immediately, while the structure is empty.

How is an industrial job quantified?

Square metres of net for the area being covered, plus running metres of spike for the individual items, with rows counted on wide flanges. Send bay dimensions and photographs of the roof structure.
