Rooftops are perimeter jobs. The quantity is decided by the parapet loop and the width of the coping — and both are usually larger than people expect before they walk it with a tape.

What Makes a Rooftop Different

Every other bird job is a surface you can point at. A rooftop is a loop, and loops add up fast. A modest 40 ft by 30 ft terrace has a 140 ft perimeter. If the coping is six inches wide and needs two rows, that is 280 running feet before you have touched the water tank platform or the lift room.

The second difference is exposure. Nothing on a building takes more sun, rain and wind than the parapet. Galvanised steel that would be fine on a sheltered sill will show rust streaks down a parapet face within a couple of seasons, and those streaks are permanent on plaster.

Rust streaks are not a warranty issue, they are a spec issue

Once a rusting fixing has streaked a parapet, replacing the spikes does not remove the mark. On exposed rooftops, specify SS-304 from the start.

How a Rooftop Is Measured

  1. Walk the parapet loop with a tape and record each straight run separately. Do not calculate it from the floor plan — returns and offsets get missed.
  2. Measure the coping width at several points. Older buildings vary along the same run.
  3. List the interruptions — water tank platform, lift machine room, stair headroom, mumty, any raised plinth. Each has its own edges.
  4. Count the rows. Under 4 in is one row; 4 to 8 in is two; over 8 in is three or more.
  5. Multiply and add 10% for corners and cutting waste.

The main parapet is 80% of the quantity, and the doubling for coping width is what takes it there. This is why an estimate made from a floor plan is usually about half the real number.

SS-304 stainless

The correct default. No rust, no streaking, and it outlasts the paint cycle on the parapet below it.

Double-row steel

Covers copings up to about eight inches in a single fixing run rather than two parallel strips.

Heavy-duty MS

For industrial roofs where crows and kites are the problem, not just pigeons.

Netting

For shafts, light wells and open stair cores that break the roof plane — a surface product cannot close those.

Screw fixing

Preferred on old parapets where the plaster is chalky and adhesive will not get a reliable bond.

Solar edges

Installation Notes

  1. Clear and wash first. Rooftop parapets accumulate years of droppings and nest debris. This is the longest part of the job.
  2. Check the plaster. Chalky or blown plaster will not hold adhesive. Make it good or switch to mechanical fixing.
  3. Work run by run. Complete each straight section including its return before moving on, so nothing is left half done.
  4. Close the corners. Corners are where installers stop and birds start. Cut offcuts to fill them.
  5. Do not skip the small stuff. The lift room and tank platform are exactly where birds relocate to when the parapet is treated.

Safety comes before quantity

Parapet work means working at an edge. On anything above ground floor this needs proper access and, for society or commercial buildings, a contractor rather than a resident with a ladder.

How do I estimate a rooftop quantity?

Walk the parapet with a tape, note the coping width, count rows, add the tank platform and lift room, then add 10%. Or send us photographs and we will do it.

Why is my quantity so much larger than I expected?

Almost always the coping width. A six-inch coping needs two rows, which doubles the running feet for the whole perimeter.

Which material should I use on a roof?

SS-304 stainless. A rooftop is the most exposed surface on the building, and rust streaks on a parapet are permanent.

Adhesive or screws?

Adhesive on sound, clean concrete. Screws on old or chalky plaster where adhesive will not bond reliably.

Do I need to treat the water tank platform?

Yes. It is the first place birds move to once the parapet is done, and it sits directly above the stored water.

Can residents do this themselves?

Ground-floor terraces, yes. Anything involving working at a parapet edge above ground level needs proper access and usually a contractor.

What about a shaft or open stair core?

Those are openings, not surfaces — they need netting rather than spikes.
