Bird & Pigeon Problems on Parapet Walls

A parapet is the longest uninterrupted perch on almost any building, and it is usually the surface with the largest quantity and the smallest cost per metre. Getting the coverage width and the running metres right is most of what decides whether this job works and what it costs.

At a Glance

Parapets are used because they are the highest continuous edge on the building. Pigeons roost along them in a line, facing outward, and the whole length gets used rather than one corner. That is why parapet droppings appear as an even band along the top and a streak down the outer face.

Unlike a balcony or an AC unit, there is no clever placement here. The surface is straightforward and the question is arithmetic: how wide is the coping, and how many metres are there.

Working Out What You Actually Need

Two numbers decide the order, and getting them before you enquire saves a round of back-and-forth.

The mistake that doubles the job

On a wide coping, a single row down the middle leaves a landing strip on each side. Birds simply use the outer edge. On anything over roughly 200 mm you need two rows, which means twice the running metres — and that is the number people leave out of their budget and then discover on site.

2. Running Metres — This Sets the Cost

Walk the perimeter and measure it, including the returns around stair heads, lift rooms and terrace projections. On a typical society terrace the perimeter is considerably longer than people estimate, because the projections add up.

Then decide honestly whether the whole perimeter needs doing. The faces that overlook a road, a park or open ground are used far more heavily than the face that abuts the next building. Droppings tell you which is which.

What a Parapet Roost Causes

How to Do a Parapet Properly

  1. Measure the coping width first, then the total run including returns.
  2. Check for nests in the projections — stair head ledges, machine room sills, behind the tank. Most wild birds in India are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, so wait for chicks to fledge before clearing.
  3. Clean and let it dry fully. A parapet coping is exposed and often dusty or chalky; nothing bonds to that. This usually means cleaning one day and fixing the next.
  4. Set the rows toward the edges on a wide coping, not down the middle.
  5. Carry it around the corners. Corners are the preferred perch on any parapet — two open sightlines. A run that stops short of the corner leaves the best spot available.
  6. Do the projections at the same time, or the birds relocate from the parapet to the stair head twenty feet away.
  7. Inspect before the monsoon. Check that debris has not built up on the strips and that the drains are clear.

How many rows of spikes does a parapet need?

It depends on the coping width. Up to roughly 100 mm a single row along the crown is enough. Over about 200 mm you need two rows set toward each edge, otherwise the birds use the uncovered strip on either side.

How do I calculate how much I need?

Measure the total perimeter including returns around stair heads and projections, then multiply by the number of rows the coping width requires. Send us both numbers and we will confirm.

Do I have to do the whole perimeter?

Not always. Faces overlooking open ground, a road or a park get used far more than a face against the next building. The droppings show you which faces are actually in use.

Will spikes be visible from the street?

Seen edge-on from below they read as a thin line. What is genuinely visible from street level is the vertical streaking down the parapet face, which is what they prevent.

Can spikes be fitted on stone coping?

Yes. The surface has to be clean and completely dry — exposed coping is often dusty or chalky, and that layer has to come off first or the fixing will not last.

Monkeys also use our parapet. Will bird spikes stop them?

No. That needs a different and heavier specification — see monkey spikes. Fitting bird spikes where monkeys are the problem wastes the material.
