
A parapet is the longest uninterrupted perch on almost any building, and it is usually the surface with the largest quantity and the smallest cost per metre. Getting the coverage width and the running metres right is most of what decides whether this job works and what it costs.

Parapets are used because they are the highest continuous edge on the building. Pigeons roost along them in a line, facing outward, and the whole length gets used rather than one corner. That is why parapet droppings appear as an even band along the top and a streak down the outer face.
Unlike a balcony or an AC unit, there is no clever placement here. The surface is straightforward and the question is arithmetic: how wide is the coping, and how many metres are there.
Two numbers decide the order, and getting them before you enquire saves a round of back-and-forth.

The mistake that doubles the job
On a wide coping, a single row down the middle leaves a landing strip on each side. Birds simply use the outer edge. On anything over roughly 200 mm you need two rows, which means twice the running metres — and that is the number people leave out of their budget and then discover on site.
Walk the perimeter and measure it, including the returns around stair heads, lift rooms and terrace projections. On a typical society terrace the perimeter is considerably longer than people estimate, because the projections add up.
Then decide honestly whether the whole perimeter needs doing. The faces that overlook a road, a park or open ground are used far more heavily than the face that abuts the next building. Droppings tell you which is which.

For narrower copings and for the projections — stair head ledges, machine room sills, pipe tops. Long straight runs are the cheapest surface per metre to protect.

For wide copings and where the roosting species is clearly pigeons. Wider coverage per row means fewer rows on a broad coping.

In many Indian cities the parapet is also the route monkeys use to get onto the roof. Where that is the case, bird spikes are the wrong specification and a heavier product is needed on the boundary run.

Society terraces and house boundary parapets. Usually a committee decision, because the parapet is common property and the whole perimeter is one job.
Office and hotel roof lines, where streaking down a visible facade is the trigger. Long runs, and appearance from street level matters.

Not always. Faces overlooking open ground, a road or a park get used far more than a face against the next building. The droppings show you which faces are actually in use.
Seen edge-on from below they read as a thin line. What is genuinely visible from street level is the vertical streaking down the parapet face, which is what they prevent.
Yes. The surface has to be clean and completely dry — exposed coping is often dusty or chalky, and that layer has to come off first or the fixing will not last.
