The gap behind a split AC outdoor unit is the single most used pigeon nesting spot on an Indian building. It is warm, covered, hidden and almost never disturbed. It is also the one place where a bird problem stops being a cleaning problem and starts costing you on the electricity bill.

A split AC outdoor unit gives a pigeon three things at once: a flat top to land on, a sheltered cavity behind it against the wall, and warmth from the compressor. Nothing else on a typical building offers all three. That is why the unit gets colonised even when the ledge two feet away has been spiked.
Unlike most bird problems, this one has a mechanical consequence. Nesting material packed behind and under the unit restricts airflow across the condenser coil. A condenser that cannot shed heat makes the compressor work harder for the same cooling.

Do not enclose an outdoor unit in net
It is the first thing many people try, and it makes the problem worse. The unit dumps heat by pulling air across the condenser and blowing it out. Wrapping it restricts that airflow, and restricted airflow is exactly the condition you were trying to avoid. Netting belongs across a balcony opening, not around a condenser. On this surface the answer is spikes on the landing points and closing the cavity behind — not enclosure.

Fitting only the top is the usual half-job. The bird moves to the bracket arm, and from there back into the cavity. Cover the top, the arms and the perch above, or the problem relocates by eighteen inches.
Not at the remote. Anything that involves reaching near the fan needs the power off.
Eggs or chicks: wait
Most wild birds in India are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. If there are eggs or chicks, leave them until the young fledge — commonly four to six weeks from hatching — then clear and protect the site immediately. Clearing an active nest also fails practically: the pair rebuilds within days.
Gloves and a mask. Dampen droppings before removing them so the dust stays down. Get everything out of the cavity behind the unit, not just what is visible from the front.
Top panel, both bracket arms, and the ledge or sunshade above. The surface must be dry and clean or nothing will bond to it.
This is the step that decides whether it holds. If the gap between the unit and the wall can be physically closed, close it. Where the gap must stay open for service access, spikes on the wall face inside the cavity remove the flat surface.
Whoever services the AC can look at the spikes at the same time. Twice a year is enough.

Spikes do not harm the bird
They remove the flat footprint a bird needs in order to settle. The bird assesses the surface, finds nowhere to put its feet, and goes elsewhere. Nothing is trapped or injured.
An AC unit is rarely the only surface in use. Protect it alone and the pair usually moves to the nearest unprotected edge on the same wall.
