
A window sill is a small surface with a disproportionate consequence. Droppings do not stay on it — they run down the wall face and land on whatever is below, which is usually somebody else's window, balcony or air conditioner. That is why sill jobs so often begin as a complaint from downstairs.

Sills get used because they are exactly the right size. A pigeon wants a flat ledge roughly the width of its body with a wall behind it and something overhead. A window sill under a sunshade is that, precisely. Birds land there to rest and to watch, and where the sill is deep enough or partly sheltered, they nest on it.
The surface is narrow, so the product for it is narrow. This is a bird spike job, not a netting job — there is no opening to close.

Because the sill is small, this is the surface where people try everything else first. It is worth saying plainly what happens with each, because a season spent on these is a season of droppings.

The principle behind all of it
Anything that relies on frightening a bird stops working, because birds learn quickly that nothing bad follows. Anything that removes the physical ability to land keeps working, because there is nothing to get used to.

The point of that table is that a window is not one surface, it is three or four. This is the commonest reason somebody says spikes did not work: the sill was covered and the sunshade above it was not.
The standard answer. A narrow base suits a sill, which is often only a few inches deep and sometimes sloped for drainage.

Do spikes look bad from the street?
Less than people expect. Spikes sit on the horizontal surface and are seen edge-on from below and from inside, so from street level they read as a thin line. What is genuinely visible from the street is the vertical streaking down the wall, which is what they prevent.

No. Netting closes an opening; a sill is a surface. Spikes are the correct product here. Netting comes in if you are enclosing a whole balcony or window opening.
Leave it. Disturbing an active nest is legally sensitive under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and displaced pairs simply rebuild nearby. Wait for the chicks to fledge, then clean and fit spikes straight away.
