
A cove is a continuous recess around the top of an interior, usually carrying concealed lighting. If a bird is sitting in one, it is inside your building — and that makes this the one surface where treating the recess alone will not end the problem.

A cove is the stepped or curved recess where a false ceiling meets the wall. In showrooms, malls, banquet halls, hotel lobbies, airports, banking halls and large offices it runs unbroken around the entire perimeter and carries concealed LED strip.
That gives a bird a warm, level, continuous shelf, out of sight from the floor, with no weather and no predators. It is arguably the best perch in any building. The catch, for the bird and for you, is that it is on the wrong side of the wall.
Ask how it got in before you ask what to fit
Every other surface on this site is outdoors, where birds are simply present. A cove is indoors. A bird there entered through something: a service door propped open, a loading bay, an unscreened exhaust or fresh-air louvre, a broken roof light, a gap at a truss or girder penetration, or the main entrance itself.
Spike the cove without closing that route and the bird moves to the next high surface inside — light track, signage, duct, ceiling grid. You will have paid for the cove and still have a bird in the building.
Treat this as two jobs: close the entry, and make the cove unusable so it stops being the reason a bird stays once it is in.
A cove is designed to be invisible from the floor — that is its architectural purpose. So occupation is almost never seen directly. It shows up as:

There is a fire and electrical angle too. Dry nesting material accumulating in a lighting trough sits directly against a live circuit — worth raising with whoever maintains the installation, independent of the birds.
The physical difficulty on this surface is not the height. It is that a cove runs around a trading floor, a lobby or a banquet hall, so access competes with the business.
All of that is easier if it is specified during a fit-out rather than retrofitted. If you are building or refurbishing, this is the cheapest moment by a wide margin.
The usual choice inside a cove. A narrow base fits alongside the LED strip without crowding it, and because the cove is invisible from below, appearance inside the trough does not matter — only that nothing shows above the lip.

Non-conductive and flame retardant. Transparent polycarbonate rather than metal, so it sits alongside an LED strip and its driver runs without interfering with them, and it is self-extinguishing — which answers the fire question raised above about dry material in a lighting trough.
For the entry route rather than the cove: screening a louvre, a loading bay, a roof light or an open gable. This is the half of the job that actually keeps birds out of the building.

For deep coves and wide upstands in atriums and airports, where the internal ledge is broad enough that a narrow row leaves footing beside it.
Cove lighting in living rooms and lobbies. Less common, because the space is smaller and a bird indoors is noticed within hours.
The main case: showrooms, malls, hotel lobbies, banquet halls, banking halls and airports — where droppings land on stock and in front of customers.
Coves and upstands in canteens, QA labs and packing halls, where anything overhead becomes an audit point.
It got into the building first — through a propped service door, a loading bay, an unscreened louvre, a broken roof light or a structural gap — and then chose the warmest, highest, most hidden ledge available. Closing that route matters more than the cove itself.
They stop the cove being used, which is worth doing. But if the way into the building is still open, the bird moves to the next high surface — light track, ductwork, signage. Do both.
It should not be. Fitted set back from the lip of the cove, inside the trough, nothing shows from below — which is the same reason the birds were not visible either.
Not if it is set clear of the strip and the driver runs. A narrow base is chosen here specifically so it shares the ledge with the lighting rather than crowding it.
Usually not closed, but the work is generally done outside trading hours because access towers stand on the floor. That is worth planning before quoting.
You can, but a cove is continuous and a bird excluded from one elevation simply walks round the corner. Treating the full perimeter is what actually settles it.
Yes, and it is the cheapest possible moment. During fit-out the cove is open and the access is already there. Retrofitting the same run later costs several times as much in access alone.
Dry material sitting against a live circuit is worth raising with whoever maintains the installation. Clearing the trough is sensible regardless of what is then fitted.
