Light fittings get chosen for a reason nothing else on this site shares: they are warm. Birds sit on them in winter for the heat, and the result shows up first as lighting that has quietly got dimmer — usually blamed on the fittings long before anybody looks up and sees why.

A surface-mounted batten or a high bay fitting offers a flat top, a bracket to grip, and residual warmth from the driver or ballast. In a cold month that combination is worth more to a bird than shelter, which is why light fittings get colonised in winter even when better-sheltered surfaces are available.
Where the fitting is suspended on a rod or chain, the top of the fitting and the suspension bracket both become perches, and the bird sits directly above the diffuser.

A quick way to check
If someone has said the lighting in a bay "seems dimmer than it used to be", look at the tops of the fittings before ordering lamps. On a fouled diffuser the difference after a clean is immediate and obvious, and it tells you whether you have a lamp problem or a bird problem.

Check what is above the fitting first
Very often the birds are not on the light at all. They are on the purlin or truss above it, and the fitting simply catches what lands. Spiking the fitting in that case changes nothing, because nothing was sitting on it. Look at where the droppings are thickest on the top surface: heavy in one spot means something above, spread evenly means the fitting itself.

Non-conductive and flame retardant, which is what makes it acceptable on a light fitting. It is transparent polycarbonate, so it does not interfere with electrical or communication transmission, and it is self-extinguishing — relevant when it sits against a housing that runs warm and against dry nesting material.
Where the fittings are simply the visible symptom of a roof void in use. Netting below the truss line protects the lights, the trays and the floor together.
