
On almost every dome we are asked about, the birds are not on the dome at all. The curved shell is too steep to stand on. They are on the flat drum it sits on, the ledge around its base, and the finial at the top — and protecting those three costs a fraction of what people expect to spend.

Domes in India sit mostly on temples, mosques, gurudwaras, churches, palaces and heritage buildings — and occasionally on institutional or hotel architecture. That context shapes everything about how a bird problem there gets solved: appearance matters more than anywhere else, permission is often required, and the buildings frequently have birds being fed on the premises.

Check before you spend
Look at where the droppings actually are. On most domes they are concentrated in a band at the base and around the finial, with the curved shell comparatively clean because nothing can stand on it. If that is what you see, protect the band and the finial and leave the shell alone — which is a far smaller job, and a far less visible one.
Spiking the outside changes nothing if they are getting inside
Many domes have openings in the drum — ventilation slots, jaali screens, small windows, or simply gaps where the structure has weathered. Birds go through them and roost in the void, which is dark, sheltered and completely undisturbed.
Where that is happening, the droppings appear below the dome, inside the building, and no amount of work on the outer surface helps. The answer is closing those openings with net, sized to the opening and fitted so it is invisible from the ground.
On this building type both matter more than the product does.
Around temples, gurudwaras and many public buildings, grain is put out for birds daily. That is a settled practice and not something a bird control supplier should be arguing with — but it is worth understanding what it means practically.
A reliable food source supports a much larger resident population than the building would otherwise carry, and that population roosts on the nearest suitable structure. Where the feeding area is directly beside the building, physical protection has to do all the work against a strong pull.
Where it is possible to move the feeding point further from the building — even twenty or thirty metres — the pressure on the structure drops noticeably, and the physical measures then hold much better. That is usually a decision for the trust or committee rather than for a contractor.

Where the base ring is wide — a broad plinth or a deep cornice band — and a narrow row would leave usable footing beside it.
Decorative domes and cupolas on bungalows, farmhouses and gate structures. Small, and usually just the base ring.

Almost never. The curved shell is usually too steep for a bird to settle on. The droppings are normally on the flat base ring, the cornice band and the finial, and those are what need protecting.
Because the birds are getting into the dome void through an opening in the drum — a vent, a jaali, or a weathered gap. Closing those openings is the fix; work on the outer surface will not help.
Fitted only on the base ring and with the base colour matched to the stone, it reads as a shadow line. Leaving the shell untouched is what keeps a dome looking like a dome.
That is a question for the heritage authority, not for a supplier. Fixing anything — adhesive included — to historic fabric needs consent. Ask before arranging access, and prefer reversible methods.
Not necessarily. Most trusts want the fouling stopped on specific surfaces rather than the birds gone. Protecting the base ring and closing the void does that. Moving the feeding point further from the building, if the committee is willing, makes everything else hold better.
Around the circumference, following the surface, not across the diameter. Also send the width of the flat band — that decides one row or two.
Wait until the young fledge before clearing. Most wild birds in India are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and dome voids are prime nesting sites, so this is worth checking properly before scheduling anything.
