An edge has nothing behind it. That makes it the first line birds touch when they approach a building — and the harshest place on the whole structure to fit anything, because it takes the full wind, sun and rain, and whatever is fitted there hangs directly over people.

“Edge” covers the exposed outer line of a building: the roof edge, the coping stone on a wall, the fascia along a canopy, the drip edge of a slab, the top of a boundary wall, the rim of a chajja. Different names, one condition — a narrow surface with open air on one side and no shelter above.

Fix the edge and less lands everywhere else
Birds do not fly straight to a balcony or a window. They come in, land on the outermost line of the building — the roof edge or coping — look around, and move inward from there.
That makes the edge an upstream surface. Protecting it reduces pressure on the ledges, sills and balconies below it, which is why on a whole-building job the edges and parapets are done first.
Do it the other way round — protect every balcony and leave the roof edge open — and the population stays on the building, simply redistributed.
An edge gets the worst of everything, all year. If a deterrent is going to fail anywhere, it fails here, and usually within a couple of summers:

So the specification questions on an edge are different from anywhere else. Not “how wide is the coverage” but is the base UV-stabilised, is the metal stainless, and how is it held down.
Treat the fixing as a safety item
A roof edge, a coping or a canopy fascia is directly above a footpath, an entrance, a parking bay or a road. A section that works loose does not just stop working — it falls, from height, onto whatever is below.
That changes the standard. On a sheltered internal ledge a marginal fixing is a performance issue; on an edge it is a liability. Where wind exposure is high or the substrate is doubtful, mechanical fixing rather than adhesive alone is the right call, and the run should be inspected periodically like any other item at height.
It also rules out improvisation. Wire, cable ties and pinned-down mesh along a roof edge will come adrift, and they come adrift over the entrance.
An edge is usually part of the drainage detail: a coping throws water clear of the wall face, a drip edge stops it tracking back underneath, a fascia sits alongside the gutter line. Anything fitted there has to leave that working.
The usual choice for roof edges and wide copings. On a long exposed run, wider coverage per row is what keeps it to a single row over a large length — fewer fixings, less to weather, less to inspect.

Not for the edge itself — there is nothing to close. Net belongs behind an edge: an open void under a canopy, a gap behind a fascia, a recess set back from the drip line.

The edge. Birds land on the outermost line of the building first and work inward, so protecting the roof edge and parapet takes pressure off everything below. Doing the balconies alone just redistributes them.
Almost always UV or fixing. An unstabilised base goes brittle and snaps; an adhesive-only fixing on weathered coping peels from one end in high wind. Both are specification problems, and both show up at an edge before anywhere else.
On an exposed edge over a footpath or entrance, mechanical fixing is the safer answer. Adhesive can work on sound substrate at lower levels, but a coping that is weathered or chalky will not hold it through a monsoon and a summer.
It should not, and this is worth stating to the fitter. Nothing should bed across the drip edge or sit in the gutter line — water tracking back under a coping causes damp in the wall below.
Barely. At roof-edge height it reads as a thin line against the sky. Rust streaking from poor-grade metal is far more visible than the product itself, which is the real appearance argument for specifying properly.
Repoint or repair before fitting. Anything fixed to failing masonry at that height is a falling hazard, not just a deterrent that will stop working.
Once a year, after monsoon. The edge is the most exposed run on the building and the one directly over people, so it is worth a look even when everything appears fine from the ground.
