Bird problems are not really about birds — they are about surfaces. A pigeon lands on a parapet for a different reason than it nests behind an AC unit, and the two need different products. Find your surface below.

Most bird control that fails, fails because the wrong product was fitted to the surface. Spikes stop a bird landing on an edge. Netting stops a bird entering a space. Fitting spikes to an open balcony, or netting to a narrow ledge, wastes both.

Flats, houses, balconies, terraces and society blocks. Small runs, and often a whole-building requirement once one flat has solved it.
Offices, hotels, showrooms and shopfronts, where appearance matters and droppings above an entrance are a real problem.
Warehouses, factories and large sheds, where surfaces are steel and quantities run to hundreds of metres.
Before choosing anything, work out what the birds are actually doing. Almost every wrong purchase on this site comes from treating a nesting problem as a perching one. You can usually tell without seeing a single bird, from the pattern the droppings leave.

If you photograph nothing else, photograph where the droppings are heaviest. It tells us more than a description of the building does.
Active nests are protected
Most wild birds in India are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. In practice this means an active nest — one with eggs or chicks in it — must not be disturbed, destroyed or sealed over, whatever it is costing you.
This is not a formality on enclosed surfaces. Sealing a pelmet, a cavity or a recess with young inside traps them, which is both illegal and something you would then be living with.
The practical answer is timing. Wait until the young have fledged, then clear and fit within the same week. A pair returns to the same site year after year, so that short window between one brood leaving and the next season starting is the entire opportunity. Miss it and you wait another cycle.
Open perching surfaces have no such restriction — those can be done whenever.
Nearly every customer has tried something before calling. It is worth being direct about why the common remedies fail, because it explains what a deterrent has to actually do.

Physical exclusion is the only approach that keeps working after the birds have got used to it — a surface that cannot be stood on, or an opening that cannot be entered.
Is somebody feeding them?
If grain is being scattered on a terrace, a balcony or in a society common area, no amount of hardware holds. Feeding concentrates pigeons in one place, and pigeons that are fed on a building nest on that building. You can protect every ledge on the block and the pressure simply moves to the ones you have not done yet.
In housing societies this is usually well-meant, often religious, and almost never discussed — which is why deterrents get blamed for failing. It is a committee conversation, and it needs to happen alongside the physical work rather than after it.
Feeding birds is not the problem in itself. Feeding pigeons, on the structure, with loose grain, is. A proper feeder sited away from the building has small ports that pigeons cannot use at all — see bird care and water feeders, which is the version of this that helps rather than backfires.
If the problem is the building rather than one balcony, the order matters more than the products. Birds arrive at the highest, outermost line and work inward and downward from there, so protection follows the same path:
The common mistake is starting at step five, because that is where the complaints come from. Protecting balconies while the roof edge and parapet stay open does not reduce the population on the building — it redistributes it, and the next complaint comes from a different flat.
Send a photograph. One wide shot of the area and one close-up of where the droppings are heaviest tells us more than a description can — the pattern of droppings shows whether the birds are landing, nesting or passing through, and that decides the product.

Follow the droppings. A line of droppings along the ground means the birds are sitting on a horizontal edge directly above it. A scattered patch usually means they are flying through rather than perching.
The surface, always. Its width and shape decide the product, the row count and the fixing method. Choosing a product first is how people end up with a wide strip overhanging a three-inch sill.
Treat them together and work top down — parapet first, then chajjas and sills, then railings and AC units. Doing one surface at a time just moves the birds to the next untreated edge.
On running length — the total metres of edge to be treated — plus fixings. Surface width matters too, because anything over about four inches needs two rows.
Yes. Both are passive, non-lethal deterrents and are permitted on residential and commercial buildings across India. Netting usually needs society approval because it changes the elevation; spikes usually do not.
Balconies, sills and AC units are straightforward DIY. Parapet edges, trusses, domes and anything at height need proper access and usually a contractor.
Two to three weeks for an established roost. They will keep testing the spot before giving up, and removing the treatment early is the one thing that guarantees they come back.
